About This Project
Career Coffee is a project about our search for fulfilling careers.
If you’ve found yourself thinking:
“What am I doing with my career?”
“I’m trying to figure out what’s next.”
“I have no idea what I’m doing.”
“I just want to find a job that I love.”
Then this project is for you.
The Questions
This project began with questions. Why do some people have incredibly fulfilling careers? What have they figured out? Why is it that some find their calling early in life? Why is it that some people stumble around initially but eventually find their way to fulfilling work? Why is it that other people keep switching but never quite find their stride?
And most importantly, how do we help more people to find their way?
Theories and Stories
This project is about exploring the theories and stories that might answer those questions. There are no one-size-fits-all answers. In fact, there may not even be answers. We might find that all we have to work with is stories and theories. Pick and choose what you believe applies to your life.
The Premise
Career Coffee believes:
1. Good work comes from both following your passion and not following it. You must develop an intuition for what is a good fit for you. You must explore and discover what clicks. But true passion comes from commitment and mastery. It comes from sticking with your interest long after the novelty has worn off and persisting until you have achieved extraordinary skill.
2. Good work is tied to growth. Sometimes the learning curve will be too steep, and sometimes it will plateau. When in doubt, keep choosing growth.
3. Good work is tied to contribution. It is often tied to making an impact on people, whether at an individual, team or societal level.
4. Good work requires you to show up as who you are. Select for good environments or create them. Then find a way to bring your whole self to work.
We expect this list to change as we learn more.
Experiments
In this project you will find a series of experiments in career discovery. These experiments are ways for people to reflect on their career paths in the hopes that we might make a little more sense of what it is that they need to find fulfilling work.
